CharterMason is proud to be Platinum Sponsor for the upcoming DevOps Talks Conference (DOTC), running 11-12 May 2017 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), in Melbourne Australia.
This is the first in a series of previews of authors, researchers and presenters as we get ready for DOTC 2017.
The conference program comprises keynotes and technical talks. Major themes for 2017 include Cloud, Culture Changes, Architecture, Continuous Delivery, Containers, Security and Innovations. Presentations will be a mix of one hour keynotes, 30-45 minute presentations and 15 minute lightning talks.
We’re looking forward to hearing from Alex Balk, DevOps Team Leader at OutBrain.
Alex has over 15 years of experience in large scale computing, ranging from Intel’s compute grid, through HPC clusters, to Outbrain’s web-scale server farms. In the past few years, Alex has assembled and led several teams at Outbrain, charged with managing thousands of servers in an agile, complex environment. Alex’s academic background is in the field of Psychology (only the fun parts) and back home he reports to a lovely wife and two ninja kids.
The OutBrain DevOps environment features:
- 3 physical locations in the US, running thousands of physical servers
- 120+ releases to production daily
- 250+ Chef cookbooks and 1000+ roles
- 250+ billion monthly recommendations
- 500+ million users reached monthly
Alex will share his secret recipe for operational management and CI-CD for over 100 deployments per day on over 8K physical nodes in several locations.
He’ll also discuss the daily challenges faced by OutBrain’s Production Engineering Team:
- transforming and scaling DevOps when you have over 100 developers, in a dozen different teams, running different projects
- maintaining velocity and production standards, while avoiding burnout due to context switches.
We also look forward to welcoming Ariel Moskovich from AppsFlyer.
Ariel is a dedicated Operations Engineer with more than 15 years of experience in high scale and live production environments. He is currently DevOps Lead at AppsFlyer, the world’s leading mobile attribution & marketing analytics platform. At AppsFlyer, Ariel has built a team that is running high scale multi-cloud operations, which serve over 12 billion events per day. Previously, he worked as a Senior Operations Engineer at the most challenging environments of Outbrain and Orbitz. Ariel is married to a wonderful wife, and a survival of three demanding yet sweet kids.
Ariel will share his knowledge and lessons that he learned while running a Kafka cluster in production with more than 8 billion messages per day. His presentation will cover:
- Kafka Usage At AppsFlyer
- Testing The Cluster
- Collecting Metrics And Alerting
- Problems With The New Cluster
- Splitting The Cluster, More Changes And The Current Configuration
In our next conference preview, we’ll take a look at the Security presentations coming up at DevOps Talks 2017.
